Writing, No, Dreaming Without Limits

I love to write, or I wouldn’t be blogging.

In fact, that’s part of why I started blogging, this incessant need to write. I had a journal, but that wasn’t enough. It wasn’t doing quite what I needed it to do. I wrote on my computer about various and sundry things, but those stories would sit on my hard drive and languish there.

Until this blog came along.

I always knew I loved to write, from the time I was six years old. For years my mom had a very simple story I wrote in the first grade that had impressed my teacher, who wrote, “Good Writing!” across the top in big, bold letters. I’m sure that story was on the refrigerator for a long time.

All through grade school, even into college, it felt like cheating if an exam was written. It was almost a certain “A” for me, if I could write on the subject.

I was a journalism major and started out as a reporter. I did well those first couple of years, but decided to pursue public relations and communications instead. The problem with that line of work is, you don’t do as much writing. There’s a whole lot of other stuff thrown in the mix.

Of course there’s plenty of other stuff to love in life besides writing.

But among other things, writing is how I dream. So I can never give it up.

Things happen and we don’t always get to do what we want to do, be who we want to be. We get sidetracked from our dreams for a time. That doesn’t mean we stop dreaming. I’ve had some setbacks in recent years, and I thought I was doomed, quite frankly, to a minimized life.

I no longer believe that. Yes, reality limits us. But dreams can come true, and life can be good again. You never know what day will bring the magic.

  1. I love what you have here, especially “Things happen and we don’t always get to do what we want to do, be who we want to be. We get sidetracked from our dreams for a time. That doesn’t mean we stop dreaming.”. I too felt that way and then I got into blogging. This is the closest thing I came to being a writer. You are correct, we shouldn’t stop dreaming and believing that one day we can be what we’ve always wanted to be. Thanks for sharing this!

  2. Thank you for this, Belinda. I am a Journalism graduate, too, and reading about your experience really lift my spirits. You are blessed to experience a ‘reporter-life’. 🙂 That is actually my dream that has never come true yet. I am instead in Public Relations and like you said, there are bunch of non-writing tasks that this industry requires of us. Nonetheless, I will keep dreaming. To be newspaper reporter is still my dream, and your words made me realize that it is still possible. 🙂

      1. That’s so true. Realistically, I have no idea how I will become one. I’ve tried, actually, but no company accepted me because I am no graduate of prestigious universities. Realistically, it is more impossible than possible. But I choose to believe. 🙂

  3. you are so right in saying reality stops us. I am stuck on a short story of mine, just because a minor detail is unrealistic and far-fetched. I relate to your story so well, having experienced similar a path of life. But am finally pursuing it now 🙂 All the best for your journey 🙂 My motto for this year is that “dream come true”. Hope they do for you as well 🙂

    1. I’m so sorry that detail is holding you back in your short story! How frustrating! Funny, I didn’t really have a motto per se for the new year, but my thoughts have been going along the way of “dream come true.” Best for both of us!

  4. Great post Belinda. You never know what each day will bring. What’s the Woody Allen line…”80 percent of success is just showing up?” You should never give up on your dreams. Ever. And you have to keep your eyes and ears open all the time because today might be the day those dreams can become reality if you just recognize an opportunity that presents itself..

  5. I have to agree with you about writing. Though my love for reading started first, I always felt I had something to say. I dream through my writing as well. However, I feel like since committing in January, I have only begun to dream. I always gotten A’s on my writing assignments as well. On a 6th grade science essay, I got an A+. However, my teacher told me he wanted and essay and not a book. Lol… as I remember that. He was a really good teacher, too. I also remember writing a story on a current topic of concern and my teacher used my essay as a class example. What an honor for me. I am so looking forward to seeing how God shows up as we stay focused and directed. Enjoyed this post, it brought back memories. Have a great day and an awesome week!
