As I mentioned in last week’s Caturday post, I took the cats to the vet for their annual exams. They did pretty well once we got there (the ride over was no fun) and submitted to the exams with little fuss. Since I hadn’t put them on a diet, I was dismayed to learn that each had lost a pound over the past year. The vet was concerned as well and recommended a senior blood test for both of them. So I shelled out the big bucks for that. Then they each ended up needing a urine test. The results of all these tests? Mimi has a thyroid problem and both have early stage kidney disease. Oh, Walter also has a heart murmur, which the vet detected during his exam. It’s a small murmur, very low on the murmur scale, but could be indicative of bigger problems down the line.
So we’ll be adding a supplement to their meals for the kidney disease. The rest we just have to wait and see. My babies are getting older!

That is sad — and expensive — news… Glad a different diet can help with their kidney situation.

According to the vet, the medication I’m giving them should help a lot. The trick is getting them to eat it–I sprinkle it on their food, and they don’t always eat everything. Trial and error getting this to work.

Oh, Belinda….I think this was what I needed to go ahead and schedule Parker’s checkup. She is due for her yearly checkup, but being 13 years old, I was going to save her the trauma of the vet. I am sorry about Walter and Mimi, but it made me rethink my thinking. Piper is going two years on her kidney diet–so far so good. Makes you realize kitties are just like humans–all kinds of things pop up as we get older. Love to your kitties from mine. 😻

Thank you! I’d encourage you to take Parker in. My kitties were just fine at 13, but at 14 all these problems popped up. I’m so glad Piper is doing well. In a way it’s good that both of mine have kidney problems as separating them when they eat would be really difficult. You’re right–kitties have more problems the older they get! Both of mine had lost more than a pound in the last year, and I don’t know what to do about that. I’m feeding them the same amount. Sigh.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, Belinda. It sounds stressful for all of you and I know how much you love your fur babies!😢🙏

Thank you! It is stressful, but hopefully we can get into a rhythm and that will reduce the stress.

Sounds like you have a plan. It’s good that Walter’s heart murmur is low grade. They certainly don’t look old, Belinda. They have baby faces!

Thank you. When I look at older pictures of them, I think they look just the same (well, not the pictures from when they were under two). Hopefully, they both maintain this level of health for a while. I know that as they age it likely will get worse, but for now we’re good.

It definitely gets expensive as they get older, but the medication will help.

If I can get them to take it. I sprinkle it on their food and they don’t eat it! Trial and error, I guess.
