Disappointment

I found out something disappointing today. Some yarn that I’d ordered has been discontinued, and my order was canceled. Now, they gave me a full refund, of course, and a 10 percent discount on my next order. But I need the yarn I originally ordered to finish a project that’s sitting in a bag in my spare room.

Why is it that life’s little disappointments can have such a large impact on us? I won’t go so far as to say I’m really upset over this news–I’ve come up with a Plan B–but it’s staying with me. And I don’t know why.

I’ve tried to think of bigger disappointments that may have occurred lately that I’ve suppressed feelings about, but really don’t have any. It’s not that my life has been mundane, because things keep happening, but nothing that gives me a feeling of being let down.

Okay, there is one thing that’s been difficult for me. I can’t think of anything to blog about. I assume I haven’t been the only one to get the flashback notices, telling me about blog posts I made on this same date in years past. Ten years ago I was a prolific blogger, posting items three to four times a week. Now it seems that well is dry.

Nothing to do with this blog post–except the name–but I thought it was a cool picture.

It’s been fun looking back, and I keep thinking I’ll find inspiration in former posts. But so far, nothing. And that is disappointing.

When I come up with an idea, I do a search to see if I wrote about it before. Inevitably, I did. I do post things about my cats and that’s fun, but I’d like to write about more substantial topics, too.

So I’m sending out this request. If you have a distinct way of coming up with blog post ideas, let me know. And yes, I do look at the prompts, but they don’t usually do it for me.

Thank you!

  1. The first thing that occurred to me when I read your inquiry into ideas was…reach back into all those prior posts. When you were more prolific, you clearly were inspired by those subjects you posted about. I think of that quote about when you are doing something you love, you lose track of time and are in the “flow.” The answers to writing something brand new may very well lie in what you wrote back then. Your Classic For A Reason reviews are fantastic, and perhaps reviewing more films or features on film stars is of interest? Our perspectives on things can change as we get old-er, and maybe there are things you wrote about back then you see with a different set of eyes now? Hope this helps!

    1. Some very good thoughts. I do hope to get back to writing movie reviews, maybe not as many as before, but I have some films I’d like to write about. Of course that’s on a different blog. You did give me the seed of an idea with your comment about getting old-er. We’ll see if I’m able to do anything with it!

  2. The well will replenish. I think two things I’ve learned in the past year is to give myself grace on thinking about the well. There’s no rhyme or reason. And secondly, I’ve come to worry less about whether or not I’ve already written on something. Maybe you have, maybe you haven’t. Your readers won’t mind. Hang in there.

  3. I completely related to everything you wrote, Belinda. Like you, I used to post enthusiastically quite often and I don’t anymore. I feel like my well ran dry, but it’s also that I released so much by writing that I’m peaceful and have less angst. But it also is a block to opening my heart and sharing in a way that was always so helpful for me.

I don’t know that I have any answers to that except allowing myself to choose where I want to spend my time. If I’m not writing, there are other creative avenues for me. Or just enjoying peace. I feel that I’ve earned that! What came to mind was “expectations lead to disappointment.” I try to just go with the flow!

Also, you are grieving and my heart goes out to you. Navigating your grief and writing those feelings is something you might tap into to feel better. Sending love and hugs!

    1. Thank you, Judy. Sharing my grief is difficult, but it may help me to process it. I started this blog for reasons that don’t exist anymore, so I suppose I need to find a new reason for it. Your words have helped me.

      1. That’s a great insight, Belinda. This is a new reason – and not only will your writing help you, it also helps other people who can’t put their grief into words. I’m so glad I could be helpful.

  4. I have to say that you are not the only one to be challenged by what to write about. I started including my devotions, how my days were going, etc. Much of what we write about is repeat information or should I say it comes from your perspective. You can start sharing your journey as a writer or blogger. Just keep writing. You will eventually come up with different spins on what you’ve already shared. We all go through our seasons, Belinda.

  5. I’ve noticed this with quite a few bloggers, including myself. I think we came along around the same time? Was it 2015? So, I’ve let some of the pressure off myself. I mean 11 years is a long time writing about life 💁🏽‍♀️

  6. We all go through dry spells, and some last longer than others. Just write when you feel like it, whenever you feel like it. Don’t force yourself. Big topics, small topics, it doesn’t really matter. The important thing is that you’re enjoying it.
